Embossing Leveler : How to effectively use
Most old homes will be affected by asbestos, mold, mildew and other problems especially on older tile flooring. All of these issues need immediate attention as soon as they are discovered in the house, but the asbestos is even more serious as it can lead to severe health conditions. Asbestos is actually a tough, resilient fiber able to bring about various respiratory diseases and other health issues like cancer. Continue reading this article to learn how you can repair the floors and seal the new tile installation with embossing leveler to prevent further problems.
It is important to point out that an embossing leveler is really a mortar compound which is useful for getting the tougher stick or vinyl tile surfaces ready to act as a layer when installing new floors. The main purpose of using this is to reduce the problems of any seams or elevated texture within the older flooring to stop it from showing up on the new floor covering and also to offer a secure foundation for bonding.
The following are the tools and materials required for this project:
Two buckets, embossing leveler, hammer, pry bar, wood paint stick stirrer, metal trowel, wet mop and a degreaser cleanser, if needed.
How to repair old tiles
The pry bar and hammer will be used for removing the baseboards from the affected areas. You should take the baseboards gently from the wall in order to prevent splintering, as you can use these later. When the boards are completely removed from the flooring, this will allow you to apply the leveler much better.
Next, you need to prepare tiles by using a wet mop to get rid of all the debris and dirt. The degreasing cleanser can be used at this time if you have oily spots on the floor. After all this, you can rinse the surface thoroughly with water and then allow drying to some degree, until it is moist to touch.
The embossing leveler should be mixed with water based on the instructions provided by the manufacturer in a large bucket. The paint stick stirrer can be used to mix the compound in order to get a smooth thickness.
Now, you are ready to spread the leveling compound onto the floor with the help of the metal trowel. Similar to leveling cement when installing a floor, the metal trowel will be used for smoothing the surface after putting on the leveler. Keep in mind that you only have a short space of time to disperse this evenly because the leveler will start to set quickly. The objective is to get the underlayment to form a thin coating for the tile, thus making an enclosed surface where no asbestos can break free.
Let the compound dry for a minimum of 2 hours or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Try not to walk on the surface during the process of drying. When it is properly cured the hammer can be used to replace the baseboards.
Embossing leveler an also be used for effectively leveling cement or concrete, covering asphalt, leveling and patching steel, skim coating and patching wood for underlayment and much more.
